while in the United States people go fighting for their rights, on the other side of the Atlantic ocean governments move to secretly apply restricting and controlling laws who are going to limit our freedom.  ACTA, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, has just been signed in by the European Union indeed.

ACTA, for those who don’t know, is kind of like SOPA’s european twin law:  a multi-national trade agreement that tries to protect copyright through a severe censorship strategy. From the European Digital Rights Group (EDRI):

The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) is a plurilateral international agreement which wants to set a “gold standard” for the enforcement of intellectual property rights. The Agreement will have major implications for freedom of expression, access to culture and privacy. It will also harm international trade and stifle innovation.

The EU and 22 member states signed the agreement today according to Wired. The only five member states who have yet to sign the agreement are Cyprus, Germany, Estonia, Netherlands and Slovakia. They are expected to sign it soon though. Australia, Canada, South Korea, Japan, Morocco, New Zealand, Singapore and the U.S. (though in the U.S. this is being unconstitutional and so needs to be approved by the Congress before being signed by the president)  signed the agreement back in October 2011.

The EU signed it, but it’s still not international law just yet. The vote must go before the European Parliament first before becoming law and it’s expected to be voted in May.

Now, being a musician, it might sound a little weird to have me AGAINST this act: I am aware of the internet sharing problem which kinda poisoned the market in the last two decades dropping musical and film industries into the darkest inferno. Still I believe repression is not the way: we ALREADY have national and international laws that should handle these problems and that often (like in my country) are never being applied.

It’s ridiculous how few weeks ago I signed for the abolition of the SOPA/PIPA as international citizen, while “secretly” in EU just under my nose my (and other) countries signed for such a pact. As an italian citizen, member of the EU, and citizen of the world I feel like i need to share this emotional discomfort with you all. Like Propagandhi used to say on their record “Today’s Empires, Tomorrow’s Ashes”:

Knowledge is power, arm yourself.

Good job Italy.

After being awarded at the Venice Film Festival 2011 and the Rome Luce Film Festival 2011, First Last Kiss (“L’Ultimo Primo Bacio”) directed by bass player A.Filippelli, has been selected for the upcoming MArte Live Awards in the category best subject. First Last Kiss is one of the few videos (if not the first) to heavily deal with the topic of homosexuality: earlier censored by a government act, then broadcasted by alternative channels like RockTV (which selected the work like Video Of The Week) and VideoITALIA, this video characterized by an american like pop sound and by a hot topic like the gay one, has been receiving nominations and awards since its release.

This video clip has been entirely produced by the band and it’s the second independently released clip of the album Fragile (fourth video officially released for the record).

In our ten year careers as musicians and above all as human beings, we have faced a lot of situations, changes, and challenges: going to university, quitting studies, moving to another city to find a better job, saving money to keep our dreams alive, struggling with the loved ones in order to keep our crazy souls busy,  making  records, going on tour, facing the digital revolution, getting married, having babies, being back to square one, feeling alive.

As Italians, we’ve been lucky to be able to travel across the world, bringing our own music to our fans and friends, doing our best to always prove that although maybe our intentions were mistaken, or our lives appeared broken, one thing remained: our feelings were real.  Being part of a collapsing generation, filled with a broken promised youth,  snared in a failing capitalistic system  ruled by overpowered banking companies and selfish blindfolded politicians turned our lives into a never ending fight where the most dangerous enemy became the will to ignore all the things that make us both think and suffer, simultaneously. As a result, our minds keep eclipsing what’s worth the most:  leaving our spirits blank or our dreams becoming unachievable.

The song 1981 is an anthem for all of the generations lost in this premature millennium: those who face a world lacking of heroes where the perspective of a brighter future seems to fade out in a seemingly endless saga called modern society. This song goes to all of our families, friends, fans, and above all, strangers, who have lost sight of hope or perhaps got lost along the way to continuos happiness.

Thirty years ago we were born as human beings, thirty years ago we were born as dreamers, philosophers, artists, lovers. Don’t let it all end here: make noise because the revolution sleeps. Make noise.
